Saudi-backed LIV Golf to air on TV
Saudi-backed LIV Golf is set to air on TV after signing a deal with Fox Sports. The multi-year agreement will see almost all LIV tournament play aired across Fox channels and streaming services, with about half of the competitions airing on the flagship Fox television network and its primary cable sports channel, FS1. The remainder of the play will be broadcast on Fox Business, FS1, and the Fox Sports app.
LIV Golf, financially backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds, made its debut in 2023. The inaugural season saw LIV Golf air on the CW Network in the US through a revenue-sharing model. The CW deal, however, failed to attract a significant audience, with reruns of syndicated shows outperforming live LIV events.
LIV Golf's inaugural season was followed by an eight-tournament series in 2022, fronted by Greg Norman. The circuit then expanded to a $405 million 14-tournament league in 2023, featuring a team format with 12 teams of four players each.
The 2025 season of LIV Golf will kick off in Saudi Arabia on February 6, with the season-opening event in Riyadh being played under lights during all three of its shotgun start rounds. The move to play under lights is to cater to American television audiences and address the issue of ratings, which has plagued professional golf in recent years.
