The first tournament was hosted at the Kimberley Golf Club from 26 September to 1 October 1892, as part of the Kimberley Exhibition. The tournament was a match play event, with each round consisting of 18 holes played in pairs. The losers of each match were eliminated, and the winners progressed to the next round. The favourite, Pat Grant, was defeated by Denholm Walker in the early rounds. Walker ultimately won the championship, defeating H.J. Mackay by one hole in the final.
The second South African Amateur Championship was held at the Port Elizabeth Golf Course and was referred to as the SA Tournament. The format of the tournament changed from match play to stroke play.
