When Hickory Sticks began to run low on funds, its owners approached Callaway, who had recently sold his vineyards for a profit of $9 million. Callaway bought half of the company in 1982, and it was renamed Callaway Hickory Stick USA. He became the company's president in 1983 and moved its headquarters to Carlsbad, California.
Callaway tasked his company with creating products that were "pleasingly different and demonstrably superior". This philosophy led to the development of innovative products, including easy-to-hit metalwoods and irons, high-spinning wedges, and great-rolling putters. The company also developed the Rule 35 ball, which combined performance benefits such as distance, control, spin, feel, and durability into one ball.
In 1997, Callaway acquired Odyssey Sports, expanding its line of putters and introducing the Odyssey White Hot putter line in 2000.
