The golf majors are the four most prestigious events in professional golf. They are the Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open, and The Open Championship. The Masters is the first major golf tournament of the year and is considered the most prestigious competition in golf. It is played at the same course every year, the Augusta National Golf Club, and was founded in 1934. The U.S. Open is known for its demanding precision, patience, and perseverance, with thick roughs, narrow fairways, and lightning-fast greens. The Open Championship, commonly referred to as the British Open, is the oldest of the majors and is played on links-style courses in Britain. The PGA Championship, founded in 1916, is the third major of the year and is widely regarded as the toughest of the four.

What You'll Learn

The Masters Tournament
The Masters was first played in 1934 as the "Augusta National Invitation Tournament", with its present name being adopted in 1939. It is the most recent men's major championship to be founded. The tournament was conceived by amateur golf champion Bobby Jones and investment banker Clifford Roberts, and takes place at Augusta National Golf Club, a private course in Augusta, Georgia. The course was designed by Jones and course architect Alister MacKenzie, and first opened in 1933.
The Masters is steeped in tradition. Since 1949, a green jacket has been awarded to the champion, who must return it to the clubhouse the following year. The Champions Dinner, inaugurated by Ben Hogan in 1952, is held on the Tuesday before each Masters tournament, and is only open to past champions and certain board members of the Augusta National Golf Club. Another tradition is the ceremonial opening tee shot, taken by a distinguished golfer, usually a past champion, on the morning of the first round.
Jack Nicklaus holds the record for the most Masters victories, winning the tournament six times between 1963 and 1986. Tiger Woods has won five times, and Arnold Palmer won four times.

The PGA Championship
The tournament was established in 1916 and is traditionally played at a parkland club in the United States. Since 2019, it has been the year's second major, taking place in May on the weekend before Memorial Day, after the Masters in April. It was formerly played in mid-August on the third weekend before Labor Day weekend, as the fourth and final men's major of the golf season. The courses chosen for the PGA Championship tend to be as difficult as those selected for the U.S. Open, and the tournament has been held at various venues over the years. Some of the early sites are now obscure, but in recent times, it has generally been played at a small group of celebrated courses. The PGA Championship has a purse of $11 million, and winners gain privileges that improve career security. They also earn a five-year exemption on the PGA Tour and a seven-year membership on the DP World Tour.
The tournament has also faced some challenges and controversies over the years. Scheduling difficulties have sometimes arisen with the PGA Championship, and in the 1960s, it was played the week after The Open Championship five times, making it difficult for players to compete in both majors. The addition of golf to the Summer Olympics in 2016 also impacted the scheduling, with the PGA of America announcing in 2017 that the tournament would be moved to May beginning in 2019.

The U.S. Open
Winning the U.S. Open bestows several privileges upon the golfer, including automatic invitations to the other three majors (the Masters, The Open Championship, and the PGA Championship) for the next five years. U.S. Open champions are also exempt from qualifying for the U.S. Open itself for 10 years and receive automatic invitations to The Players Championship and several senior majors. These privileges can make a golfer's career much more secure, even if they are not yet an elite player.

Over the years, the Open Championship has witnessed some memorable contests and champions. American Tom Watson won the tournament five times, including a victory over Jack Nicklaus in 1977 in one of the most celebrated duels in golf history. Other notable winners include Harry Vardon, who holds the record for the most Open Championship victories with six, Henrik Stenson, who became the first Scandinavian winner in 2016, and Shane Lowry, who won in 2019 at Royal Portrush Golf Club, becoming the second champion from the Republic of Ireland.
