Edgewater Golf Club, Chicago, dissolved in 1968
The Edgewater Golf Club in Chicago was established by the city in 1897 and incorporated the following year. During its 70-year existence, the club occupied three different locations. The original site was a 55-acre strip of land west of Broadway between Foster Avenue and Balmoral Avenue. However, when additional land could not be obtained for this 5-hole course, it moved north to a larger plot bounded by Sheridan Road, Loyola Avenue, Albion Avenue, and Lakewood Avenue. The original 9-hole course on Sheridan Road measured 2,804 yards, and by 1900, the length had been increased to 3,008 yards, with one hole measuring 593 yards and considered the longest in the area.
Over the years, the club's facilities were improved and expanded several times. A swimming pool was added in 1958, and a new ladies' locker room was built. However, these improvements could not stop the club from facing financial difficulties due to suburban competition and the high costs of operating a first-rate golf club within the city limits.
In 1965, the approximately 300 members of the Edgewater Golf Club voted to sell the valuable property, and by 1968, the club was dissolved. The real estate developer Kenroy, Inc. purchased the land for $7.8 million in 1969, and the former clubhouse was torn down. Despite a coalition of local groups known as the Allied North Side Community Organizations launching a campaign to save the land as open space, the City rezoned the site in 1968 to allow for the development of high-rise apartments and a large shopping center.

Edgewater Golf Range in New Jersey is closed
Edgewater Golf Range in Edgewater, New Jersey, is closed. The golf range was part of the Edgewater Golf Club, which was established in 1897 and was located in Edgewater for its first year. The club was then relocated twice due to a lack of space for expansion.
In 1965, facing competition from suburban golf clubs and the high costs of operating a city golf club, the members of the Edgewater Golf Club voted to sell the property. The club was dissolved by 1968, and the clubhouse was torn down in the same decade. The land was purchased by real estate developer Kenroy, Inc. for $7.8 million, and the site was rezoned for high-rise apartments and a shopping center.
The Edgewater Golf Club was known for its affluent clientele and hosted various golf-related tournaments and recreational activities such as luncheons, fashion shows, and book reviews. Despite strong community objections to the sale and redevelopment of the golf club, the site was transformed to accommodate the new buildings.
Today, the Edgewater Golf Club is a distant memory, and the golf range in Edgewater, New Jersey, remains closed, with no indication of reopening. The closure of the Edgewater Golf Range and the dissolution of the Edgewater Golf Club mark the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of golf and social history.
