The Los Angeles Country Club (LACC) was established soon after, in 1897, by a group of Los Angeles residents who wished to build a golf course. They leased a 16-acre lot at Pico and Alvarado streets to build a nine-hole golf course, known as "The Windmill Links", with a makeshift clubhouse crafted from the bottom of an abandoned windmill.
The course was operational by 1898, but it soon became too crowded, and the club moved to Pico Heights, where another nine-hole course was built. This course, known as "The Convent Links", was also short-lived as it became too restricted for play by the spring of 1899.
The club then moved to Beverly Hills, where an 18-hole course was designed by Joe Sartori, Ed Tufts, Norman Macbeth, and Charles Orr, and opened in 1911.
