Gulfport, Florida is a small incorporated city in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area, in Pinellas County. It borders South Pasadena and Boca Ciega Bay. Archaeological digs indicate that settlements existed in the area around 8000 to 3000 BC, and the area was densely populated during the Safety Harbor period. In 1528, the Spanish explorer Pánfilo de Narváez landed on the Pinellas peninsula, near present-day Gulfport, where he met the local Timucuan people.

As other settlers arrived, the settlement became known as Bonifacio around 1880.
