The tournament was the first PGA Tour event to be contested outside of the US and Canada. It features 132 professional golfers participating in four rounds of stroke play competition.
The tournament has a rich history and strong tradition, and it is regarded as one of the finest on the PGA Tour. It has a purse of $7.2 million, the largest of any golf tournament in Latin America. The winner of the inaugural tournament was Fred Funk, who took the tournament in a playoff over José Cóceres of Argentina.
