Volkswagen e-Golf ranked EV with lowest depreciation
The Volkswagen e-Golf is the electric vehicle (EV) that holds its value the most, according to research by CompareTheMarket. The VW electric version of the Golf was ranked the top EV with the lowest depreciation of £7,778 (25.1%), with used models selling for an average price of £23,248 – three-quarters of its new price three years ago. This is followed by two Tesla models, the Model S 75 (26.7% depreciation) and Model X 75D (27.5%). As Teslas are among the most expensive EVs and benefit from regular software updates, it could help the models retain their value, CompareTheMarket said.
The research reveals how much electric and hybrid cars depreciate in value by comparing 'new' prices for the most common plug-in and hybrid vehicles to their used prices to reveal the vehicles that hold their value the most. The Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid was found to have the best resale value over the last three years, with depreciation of 21%. This is followed by Mini's hybrid offering, the Countryman Cooper SE (31.5%), and another version of the VW Golf, the GTE Advance (36.3%).
The hybrids found to have the highest depreciation were the Kia Optima, which depreciates by £18,708 (53.2%), the Mercedes-Benz E350e (53.1%), and the Mercedes-Benz C5350e (51.5%). CompareTheMarket said that the worst-performing hybrids lose more of their value than electric cars, whereas the best-performing electric cars do not hold their value as well as hybrids. Dan Hutson, head of motor insurance at CompareTheMarket, said: "EVs are becoming increasingly popular, and now that they have been in circulation for a while, we are seeing them come onto the second-hand market, which is great news for people wanting to buy an EV or hybrid at a lower price."

The Dresden factory alone produced 50,401 e-Golf cars since 2017, while e-Golf production in Wolfsburg wrapped up in the summer of 2020. Volkswagen has ended production of its e-Golf electric hatchback. The last e-Golf rolled out of the Transparent Factory in Dresden, Germany, in December 2020, bringing the total number produced to 145,561 over seven years. The Dresden factory alone produced 50,401 e-Golf cars since 2017, while production in Wolfsburg, Germany, wrapped up earlier in the summer of 2020.
The e-Golf was Volkswagen's first mainstream battery-electric production car, launched in 2014 with a range of 118 miles. A 2017 facelift increased the battery capacity to 35.8kWh, boosting the range by around 26 miles. The e-Golf was one of the most popular EVs in Europe, particularly in Norway and Germany, where most of the e-Golfs were sold. Over 40,000 were sold in Norway, and more than 33,000 in Germany. In the US, more than 18,000 units were delivered.
The e-Golf was produced in Dresden at Volkswagen's Transparent Factory, an additional production site to meet high demand and utilize the site after the end of production of other models. The factory will now be retooled to produce the ID.3 EV hatch, with production beginning at the end of January 2021. The ID.3 is an all-new electric compact model that has been in production since late 2019 in Zwickau, Germany. The Dresden factory will be the second location in Europe to manufacture vehicles based on the new modular e-drive system.
The end of production for the e-Golf marks the start of final preparations for the ID.3. Danny Auerswald, head of plant operations at the Transparent Factory, commented: "In just a few weeks, we will be opening the next chapter for the Transparent Factory. After Zwickau, we are the second location in Europe to manufacture vehicles based on the new modular e-drive system. Volkswagen is thus underlining the importance of the Saxon plants in the group-wide E-offensive."
