The Pacific Grove Golf Links in California was designed by Chandler Egan and Jack Neville and opened for play on 9 May 1932. Egan, a US Amateur Champion, designed the first nine holes, which opened in 1932 and were laid out through the forested areas of Pacific Grove. Egan also redesigned the nearby Pebble Beach golf course in 1929.
Jack Neville, another renowned amateur golfer, extended the course to a full 18-hole layout 28 years after it first opened. He originally designed Pebble Beach in 1919 along with Douglas Grant. Neville's proposed site for the additional nine holes surrounded the base of the Point Pinos Lighthouse on land leased from the US Coast Guard. He suggested creating the new holes in a similar way to the historic courses in Scotland and Ireland, allowing the natural terrain of the windswept dunes to dictate the routing and minimise construction.
True to his word, the second nine holes of the Pacific Grove Golf Links opened for play in 1960. The course was ranked by Zagat Survey as one of America's Best Golf Courses and by Golf Magazine as one of the nation's top 50 golf courses under $50. In 2006, the Coast Guard officially deeded the Point Pinos Lighthouse and the back nine to the City of Pacific Grove, with the city pledging to reintroduce native and endangered plant species to the dunes.

The first Head Professional at the course was Fred X. Fry, one of the "Five Frys", a group of golfing brothers who were extensively involved with the game in the Bay Area. Under Fry's watch, the course expanded from 9 to 18 holes, and a new clubhouse was built. He retired in 1962 as the "father of golf" in Pacific Grove.
The course was designed to give the citizens of the City of Pacific Grove and the surrounding area a place to enjoy the open air and the game of golf. The first nine holes were laid out through the forested areas of Pacific Grove. Twenty-eight years after the course first opened, Jack Neville, another great amateur golfer, extended the course to a full 18-hole layout, using land around the base of the Point Pinos Lighthouse leased from the US Coast Guard.
