The Club's history
Royal Troon Golf Club is a links golf course in Scotland, located in Troon, South Ayrshire. The club was founded in 1878 as a five-hole golf course following a meeting in the local pub by a group of golf enthusiasts. Charlie Hunter, Keeper of the Green at Prestwick, laid out the original course, and a few of his greens are still in play today.
George Strath was appointed in 1881 as the club's first golf professional, and together with Willie Fernie, the 1882 Open champion, designed the original course, expanding it to 18 holes by 1888. Willie Fernie continuously improved the course until after World War I and is credited with designing two of Royal Troon's greatest holes, The Postage Stamp and Railway.
In 1923, Royal Troon hosted its first Open Championship, becoming the fifth Scottish course to do so. Prior to this, the Old Course was redesigned, lengthened, and strengthened by James Braid, a five-time Open champion and member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Braid's alterations included adding length and building formidable bunkers, including to the 8th hole, The Postage Stamp, creating one of golf's greatest short par 3s.
Royal Troon has since hosted the Open Championship on 11 occasions, ten for men and one for women in 2020. The club has also hosted the Amateur Championship five times, the British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship four times, the Senior Open Championship in 2008, and the Scottish Amateur six times. The club was granted its "Royal" designation in 1978 during its centenary, becoming the first and only golf club in Great Britain to receive Royal status under Queen Elizabeth II.
