CravenSpeed Platypus License Plate Mount installation guide

Thank you for purchasing the CravenSpeed Platypus License Plate Mount. This product is made from high-grade materials and is guaranteed to be free from defects. Please note that this installation process is very easy and should take around 15 minutes.

Firstly, locate the circular towing eye cover on the passenger side of the front bumper. Push on the left side of the cover and it will pop out of the bumper. The cover has a little tail that keeps it attached to the bumper skin. Give it a light tug and it should come out of the slot. You may need to squeeze the end together to make it fit through. Keep the painted cover in a safe place in case you need to put it back in later.

The hex stud included with this kit should have the part number “HEX-B19R097” or “CRVW-0069-21,” engraved on it. If the one you received doesn’t match, send an email to [email protected] and we’ll get you set up with the correct kit. Now, install the black hex stud. It should have “HEX-Y20R067” engraved on the side. You’ll need a 7/8" socket for the stud, preferably a deep socket, or an extension. Once you’ve got it in, tighten it with a socket wrench.

Next, install the 15mm flange bolt into the end of the hex stud, leaving a gap between the flange and the end of the stud that is slightly bigger than the thickness of the back plate. Grab the back plate and insert the head of the bolt through the hole in the tab. Then, slide the plate over so that the bolt rests fully seated into the slot. Hand tighten the bolt to keep it in place. While holding the back plate level with one hand, use a 15mm socket to tighten the bolt securely with your other hand.

Finally, use the 4 stainless steel button head screws to attach your license plate to the back plate. You’ll need a 5/32” hex wrench for the screws. If your car has parking sensors, you may need to adjust the plate to accommodate them. It is helpful to have a second person help you with this step. To accommodate for parking sensors, the back plate is designed so that the angle of the plate in relation to the bumper can be adjusted. If you’d also like to use a license plate frame, we have 1/2" screws available.

Congratulations! Your CravenSpeed Platypus License Plate Mount is now installed. Please note that our Platypus License Plate Mounts can be easily removed, so only put it on when you need it. For example, if you are going through an automated non-touchless car wash, simply use the included quick-release wrench to pop your plate off to avoid any interference.

Using 3M double-sided tape

To use this method, you can follow these steps:

  • Form the license plate to match the curve of the bumper: Bend the license plate to sit flush against the bumper, especially if it has a curved surface like the S550 front bumper. You can use a rolling pin to help you bend the plate and break the back of the embossed frame.
  • Clean the surface: Ensure that the area where you will apply the tape is clean and free of debris.
  • Apply 3M double-sided tape: Use outdoor-rated 3M tape, such as Scotch/3M outdoor mounting tape, or 3M's command line tape. Apply vertical and horizontal strips of tape to the sides and back of the license plate, ensuring that the tape is slightly thinner than the thickness of the license plate.
  • Position the license plate: Line up the center marks of the license plate and bumper, and position the plate so that it sits just below the break line of the front bumper. This will prevent the plate from poking up and snagging on anything.
  • Apply pressure: Use a towel to apply even pressure over the license plate, pressing it firmly onto the tape and the bumper.

While this method is convenient and reversible, it may not be as secure as using screws or bolts. If you live in an area with extreme weather conditions, the tape may not hold up well over time, and you may need to reapply it every six months or so.

Some users have reported success with this method, especially when forming the plate to match the curve of the bumper, while others have expressed concerns about the tape's ability to withstand high speeds or extreme temperatures.
