Following the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001, the 2nd Battalion was reactivated to respond to potential additional attacks within the United States. On 20 March 2003, they pushed into Iraq, fighting in several locations, including An Nasiriyah and Al Gharraf.
In December 2008, the battalion was once again activated for the Iraq War, deploying to the city of Ar Ramadi. They successfully completed over 300 missions. During this deployment, some elements of the battalion were sent to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
In recent years, the 2nd Battalion has been involved in various training and support operations. In 2018, they were activated as part of the Unit Deployment Program, conducting training with Japanese Self-Defense Forces and participating in the Korean Marine Exercise Program. 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment
The 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, also known as Golf Company, is a reserve unit of the U.S. Marine Corps Forces. The battalion was demobilized on 31 October 1945, but was mobilized again in October 1950 and sent to Camp Pendleton, California, for transfer to Korea, where they saw combat during the Korean War. In March 2006, the battalion participated in Operation Shared Accord in Niger, where they taught basic military tactics to Nigerien soldiers and provided humanitarian support. Two months later, in May, Echo Company of the 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, took part in Operation Noble Shirley in Israel, conducting joint counter-terrorism training with the Israeli Defense Forces. In September of the following year, the battalion was activated once more, this time in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and they began another tour in Iraq in January 2008, operating in the vicinity of Habbaniyah.
